The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting January 17, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. Our guest speaker this month will be Maggie Casto. She is a member of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas and will speak to us about the “DRT Traveling Trunk.” Everyone is invited to attend.

Jimmie McNeil Lawrence, 78, of Logansport, Louisiana, died January 4, 2017, in Center. Interment was in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born October 5, 1938, in San Augustine, to William Lawrence McNeil and Gladys Poindexter McNeil. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Husband, John “Tiny” Lawrence; Sisters, Carmel “Daisy” Murray, Grace Greer; Brothers, Marcus McNeil, Arnold McNeil. Survivors include, Daughter, Sheila Posey & husband, Bo; Son, Steve Lawrence & wife, Mary; Sister, Dicie McGown.

Laverne Pate Pope, 87, of Wimberley, Texas, died January 3, 2017 in Wimberley, Texas. Interment was in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born August 27, 1929 in the Waterman Community, Shelby County, Texas, to Willie Bruce and Ida Powdrell Pate. She graduated Timpson High School. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Husbands, Pete Mora, Robert Ray Hughes, Larry Pope; Sisters, LaMerle Cockerham, Oleta Darnell, Willie Day Green; Brothers, Arvel Pate, R. C. Pate, William Pate, Pershing Pate, Dalton Pate. Survivors include, Children, La Ouida Faye Mora, Janis Mora, Randy Paul Mora & wife, Lisa, Rhonda Michelle Hughes Compton & husband Thomas, Jr. Sister, Orine Ingram.

RUTH PALMER DAVIS
Ruth Palmer Davis, 86, died January 08, 2017 in Fredericksburg, Texas. The cremains are to be interred next to her son, Douglas Stuart McLendon, at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas at a later date. She was born in Oakland, California on August 21, 1930 to William Samuel and Della Irene Sherburne Palmer. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Husbands, Jack Everett McLendon, Calvin Ray Davis; Son, Douglas Stuart McLendon; Stepdaughter, Connye Sue Suehs. Survivors include, Children, Clifton Palmer McLendon & wife, Marlene of Gilmer, Texas, Elizabeth McLendon Welch & husband, Paul G. Welch of Shepherdstown, West Virginia; Stepchildren, Calvin Ray Davis II of San Antonio, Texas, Joel Craig Davis & wife, Carmella of San Diego, California, John Patton Davis & wife, Mary of Sweetwater, Texas; Daughter-in-law, Patricia Armata of San Antonio; Sister, Rosemary McDaniel of Borrego Springs, California; Brother-in-law, Adrian F.
