Historical Society Meeting

The Shelby County Historical Society will have their regular monthly meeting, Tuesday, January 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Shelby County Museum.  The speaker will be David Swanzy and he will be speaking on "The Long Trek to Shelby County" and its impact on the people and our county. Everyone is invited.

Len B. Hughes, 67, died January 5, 2011, at his home in Dallas, Texas. Len was born on Sept. 29, 1943, in Sabine Co., Texas, to Robert Irvin and Addie McDaniel Hughes. He grew up in Center, and was a 1962 graduate of Center High School. He served his country in the USAF. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Wife, Ellen Kinzie Hughes. Survivors include, Son, Ryan Hughes & wife Sarah Clopton; Daughter, Karen Hughes, all of Dallas; Brothers, Dr. Robert I. Hughes & wife Barbara of Center, Dr. Mack C. Hughes & wife Kathie of Amarillo.

Deniece Stanberry Moore, 48, died December 31, 2010 at her residence. She was born April 11, 1962 to Tommy J. Stanberry, Sr. and Bobbie Jean Tatum Stanberry in Center, Texas. She was preceded in death by her Mother , Bobbie Jean Tatum Stanberry. Survivors include, Husband, Arvis “Sneaky” Moore of Center; Father, Tommy J. Stansberry, Sr. of Center; Son, Marquis “Monakisha” Moore of Dallas, Texas; Daughters, Jeniece, Constance, Asjia Moore both of Center; Sisters, Janell (Raymond) Ridgeway of Tenaha, Sharon (Kelvin) McCowin, Jennene (Calvin) Smith both of Center; Brothers, Tommy J. (Mellisa) Stanberry, Jr. of Shelbyville, Montique (Shamika) Stanberry of Spring, Texas.
Patricia Wilson, 33, died December 14, 2010. She was born to Guy Wilson, Jr. and Jerlene Wilson on July 1, 1978. Family Members include, Sisters, Queen Anderson & husband Joe of Whitney, Texas, Claudine King of Shelbyville, Texas; Brothers, Joe Boykins & wife Edna of Shelbyville, Texas, Tommy Mason & wife Ann of DeBerry, Texas.

Avis Lambert Lout, 92, of Joaquin, died January 5, 2011 in Center. Burial was in Jackson Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born March 6, 1918, in Shelby County, to John Norris Scruggs and Annis Mae Lee Scruggs. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Husbands, Edgar Lambert, Willie Lout; Brothers, Hervy Norris Scruggs, Wrotten Lee Scruggs; Sisters, Mae Dell Scruggs, Lera Chldress, Errollene Brimberry, Audrey Dyer. Survivors include, Daughters, Edna Willis & husband David of Shreveport, LaRee Bounds & husband Randy of Joaquin; Sons, Rushing Lambert & wife Toni of Joaquin, Rodney Lambert & wife Murlene of Joaquin; Brothers, Hilburn Scruggs & wife Glenda of Joaquin, Joe Scruggs & wife Frankie of Joaquin; Sister, Eva Scruggs Melton of Center.

Brenda Estes, 66, of Joaquin, died January 5, 2011 at her residence. She was cremated. She was born August 18, 1944 to Howard “Slim” Martin and Edith (Boyd) Martin Porter. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Husband, Curtis E. Estes; Step Father, Clarence Porter; Brother, James “Buddy” Martin. Survivors include, Daughter, Tammy Garner & husband, Sam of Joaquin; Son, Curtis B. “Pete” Estes of Joaquin; Sisters, Teresa Barber of Mansfield, Louisiana, Eula Christine Paulson & husband, Craig of Texarkana, Texas; Brothers, Ray Martin of Haughton, Louisiana, Benny Martin & wife, Karen of Tenaha.

Dorothy Erline Crump Thompson, 90, died December 16, 2010. She was cremated and her ashes will be interred in Blair Cemetery, Shelby County. Born and raised in East Texas, Dorothy was the daughter of Zannie and Clara “Dee” Crump. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Sister, Edna Crump Kazar. Survivors include, Daughters, Kay Thompson Schnitzius & husband, Tom, Jan Thompson Gardner, Joanie Thompson Yust & husband, Paul; Son, Jim Thompson.
Mamie Johnson, 85, of Center, died January 7, 2011 in Center. Burial will be in East Liberty Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born July 24, 1925, in Shelby County, to John and Florence Thompson. She was preceded in death by, Husband, Willie Johnson, Jr.; Sons, Billy Gene Johnson, John Willie Johnson; Daughters, Justine Johnson, Rebecca Sue Johnson. Survivors include, Sons, Johnny Johnson, Willie Lewis; Daughter, Mamie Johnson Lister.
Hicks Mortuary, Center, Texas
Randy Fancher, 57, of Timpson, Texas, died January 7, 2011 in Nacogdcohes,Texas. Burial was in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born March 25, 1953, in Nacogdoches, to Billy Bertis and Shirley Ann Vaught Fancher. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

Carl H. Miller, 72, of Haughton, Louisiana, died January 11, 2011 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas. He was born November 6, 1938, in Shreveport, to Byron Sidney Miller and Helen May Williams Miller. Mr. Miller was retired from the Air Force, where he had served for twenty years. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Brothers, Eugene Miller, Byron S. Miller, Jr. Survivors include, Wife, Barbara S. Miller of Haughton, Louisiana; Sons, Carl H. Miller, Jr. of Austin, Randall E. She was born August 28, 1945, in Center, Texas, to William Elmer Bennefield and Mildred V. McFadden Bennefield. She was preceded in death by, Husband, George Thomas Harris, Sr.; Sister, Bonnie Sue Kelley; Brothers, W. H. Bennefield, Junior Bennefield, Charles Ray Bennefield. Survivors include, Son, George Thomas Harris, Jr. of Royse City; Sisters, Virginia Ann Burkhalter & husband Dennis of Magnolia, Eunice Lea Young of Dallas.
