The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting February 21,2012, 6:30 P.M. at the Shelby County Museum.  The speaker this month will be a representative from the Timpson Area Genealogical Society.  They will speak on their new book, "Images of America Around Timpson."  Everyone is invited to attend.


Ardath Frances Hurst Mayhar, 81, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012, in Nacogdoches, Texas. A memorial service will be held later. She was born Feb. 20, 1930, to Bert Hurst and Ardath Ellington, in Timpson, Texas. Ardath Mayhar is the author of more than 60 books ranging from science fiction, fantasy, horror and young adult to historical and westerns, with some work under the pseudonyms Frank Cannon, Frances Hurst and John Killdeer. Survivors include, Sons, James Mayhar and Frank Mayhar; Stepsons, Robert Mayhar and William Mayhar; Sister, Judy Corley; Brother, Joe Bert Hurst.

Avis Brittain Moss, 70, of Joaquin, died February 5, 2012 in Nacogdoches. Interment was in Strong Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born June 7, 1941 in Shelby County to John Willis Brittain and Tennie Buckley Brittain. She was preceded in death by, Sisters, Mary Miller, Cora Cruse, Marie Goings; Brothers, Davis Brittain, Tye B. Brittain. Survivors include, Husband, Barney Moss of Joaquin; Sons, Craig Moss of Joaquin, Buddy Moss & wife, Patti of Bridge City; Daughter, Ginger McKinzie of Beckville; Brother, J. I. Brittain & wife, Pauline of Aztec, New Mexico.

Joyce Lee Metcalf, 51, of Joaquin, died February 6, 2012 in Center, Texas. Interment was in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas. She was born July 5, 1960 in Shelby County to Alvin Thomas and Lydia Marie Burton Lee. She was preceded in death by her parents. Hazel was born to Robert and Ada Batts Henry, January 26, 1926, in Logansport, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Husband, Babe Stephens; Son, Danny Stephens, who was killed in action in Vietnam; Brothers, J.W. Henry, Ray Henry; Sister, Vera Mae Barton. Survivors include, Daughters, Lucy Pitts & husband, James, Melba Townsend & husband, Gene; Sons, Jimmy Stephens & wife, Sandra, Wallace Stephens, all of Logansport, Louisiana, Jack Stephens of Joaquin, Texas; Sister, Mildred Watts of Chandler, Texas.
