Corrections/Additions/New Stuff 


    Working at the John May Cemetery, also called Hooper-May Cemetery will start Saturday, March 19, 2005, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.   Water and lunch will be provided.  Bring your own tools, gloves, etc.  Two trailers will be provided to haul away the debris. 
    Many graves are unmarked.  If you know anyone who is buried at this cemetery, please submit the name(s) to Edgel Permenter, P. O. box 326, Joaquin, TX  75952 or call 936-269-3483. 


Shelby County in World War II exhibit is now open at the Shelby County Museum. Hours are 1p.m. to 4p.m. daily

   Howard Lynn Hughes, 70, of Tenaha died February 17, 2005, in Nacogdoches.  Burial was in Cedar Yard Cemetery.  Born August 4, 1934, in Timpson, he was the son of Allen and Bessie Era Hughes.  Mr. Hughes was retired from Tyson Foods.  Survivors include wife, Annice Hughes of Tenaha; sons, Michael Hughes of Nacogdoches and Thomas Hughes of Garrison; daughter, Deborah Moore of Oakwood; brother, Selby Hughes of Rye; sisters, Madean Cousimano of Webster, Diane Pugh of Gary and Ruth Waggstaff of Tenaha.  Taylor Funeral Home.
   Katie Campbell, 48, of Joaquin died February 20, 2005 in Center.  Burial was in Sardis Cemetery.  Born August 29, 1956, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of Billy Maurice and Minnie Wise.  Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her parents.  Survivors include husband, David Campbell of Joaquin; son, Will Campbell of Joaquin; daughter, LeeAnn Thompson of Joaquin; sisters, Joy Rankin of Logansport, Louisiana and Cynthia Kay of Tenaha.  Watson & Sons Funeral Home
   Willie Lee Farris Garner, 93, of Center died February 19, 2005, in Center.  Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.  Born February 28, 1911, in DeSoto Parish Louisiana, she was the daughter of Archie Lee and Sarah Williams Farris. Mrs. Garner was preceded in death by her husband, James Ora Garner and son, James Burton Garner, as well as 12 brothers and sisters,  Survivors include daughter, Beaula Fay Webster of Center.  Watson & Sons Funeral Home.
   Norris Askew 79, of Center died February 20, 2005, in Center.  Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.  Born December 16, 1925, in Shelby County, he was the son of John Henry and Maybell Askew.  Mr. Askew was a veteran of World War II.  Survivors include his wife, Shirley Askew of Center; son, Norris H. Askew, Jr. of Baytown; stepson, Robert McDonald of Center; stepdaughter, Donna Strickland of Palestine; sister, Grace Choron of Center; brother Morris Askew of Port Lavaca.  Watson & Sons Funeral Home.
   Maria Elena Simmons, 47, of Timpson died February 20, 1956 in Carthage.  Burial was in Powdrill Cemetery, Shelby County.  Born September 8, 1956, she was the daughter of Rafael and Ursula Soto.  Survivors include sons, Terry McClane of Dallas, Frank McClane of Abilene, Moses Soto of Center and Anthony McClane and Matthew McClane, both of Orange County, California; daughters, Billie Joel Simmons and Amanda U. Simmons, both of Timpson; mother, Ursula Soto of Timpson; brothers, Ralph Soto, Ramiro Soto and Reuben Soto, all of Timpson Roland Soto and Raul Soto, both of Elkhart, Indiana, Rey Soto of Center, Raymond Soto of San Antonio and Rudy Soto of Shreveport, Louisiana; sister, Vangie McCraw and Jane Funk, both of Elkhart, Indiana, Rose Heady and Mary Williams, both of Center and Jackie Soto of Joaquin.    Aleta Livingston, 86, of Center died February 20, 2005.  Burial was in White Rock Cemetery.  Mrs. Livingston was preceded in death by her husband, James Winfred; Parents Jim and Bertha Williams; son, James Merrill of Livingston.  Survivors include son Jimmy Renfro of Center; daughters, Charlsey Emanis of Center, Sharron Boes of Floral City, Florida and Doris Martin of Center; stepsons, Donice Livingston and Richard Livingston, both of Center; stepdaughter, Linda Quiqley of Center.
