The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting March 21, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. Our guest speaker this month will be Mr. Bill O'Neal. Mr. O'Neal is the Texas State Historian and is a well-known author. He has written many books about the history of Texas. He taught history for many years at Panola College. He will be speaking to us about The Alamo. Everyone is invited to attend.

Joseph Olenik, 65, of Joaquin, died March 2, 2017 in Joaquin as a result of an accident. Interment will be in Joaquin Cemetery, Joaquin, Texas. Joseph or “Joey” was born March 14, 1951 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Edward & Temple Rose Bazer Olenik. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, Sisters, Mitzie Duffy & husband, Dan of Arlington, Rosie Deskin of Joaquin, Lessie Olenik of Arlington.

ROY MORRIS BLAKE
Roy Morris Blake, 88, a retired State Senator and Nacogdoches business leader, died March 4, 2017, at his residence. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park, Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born March 29, 1928, in Nacogdoches to Lynn and Pattie Blake. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Deanne Goodwin Blake. After serving five years as a State Representative, Roy Blake won a special election in 1978 as State Senator from District 3 to replace the retiring Sen. Don Adams. As a senator, he represented 15 East Texas counties and held many special assignments and committee positions. This district served most East Texas counties, spanning from the Conroe area to areas just south of Tyler. These counties included Anderson, Angelina, Cherokee, Hardin, Jasper, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, and Tyler.
