                  The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting on May 15, 2018 at 2 P. M. in the Shelby County Museum at 230 Pecan Street. The guest speaker this month will be long time Center resident, Leon Aldridge. Leon is a native of Mount Pleasant in North East Texas with a 44 year career in communications that includes newspaper, marketing, public relations and education. He has twice served as Editor & Publisher of East Texas Light & Light & Champion newspapers in Center. His background includes newspaper group management, ownership & teaching communication courses at Stephen F. Austin University. He is a graduate of Mount Pleasant Texas High School, East Texas State University (now Texas A & M at Commerce) and Stephen F. Austin with post graduate work in journalism at University of North Texas. Aldridge's presentation is entitled “The Best Job in Town: The Catbird Seat for History's Adventures.” Everyone is invited to attend.

TOM MAYS (TIM) BARTON BOYD
Tom Mays (Tim) Barton Boyd, 99, of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Center, died April 18, 2018 in Fort Worth, Texas. Interment was in Cushing Cemetery, Cushing, Texas. She was born December 16, 1917 in Cushing, Texas to Eryme Summers Barton and Doctor Yancy Pascal Barton. As the First Lady of W.R. Boyd, Incorporated, Tim made a home in numerous towns and cities. Those in Texas included Cushing, Beaumont, Jasper, San Augustine, Nacogdoches, Kerrville and El Paso. In 1954 Bill, Tim and their daughter Yancy moved to Center and proudly called it home for over 60 years. She was preceded in death by, Husband, William Riley Boyd, Jr; Brother, Winston Marion Barton; Sisters, Beatrice Barton Rohrbaugh, Fanny Jo, Kathleen and Jeanette Barton. Survivors include, Daughter, Yancy Boyd Bradford (George) of Fort Worth.

IDA VERNELL GOINGS
Ida Vernell Goings, 79, of Center, Texas, died April 19, 2018 in Center. Interment was in Campti Methodist Church Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born April 20, 1938 in Center to P. A. Collum and Vertie Holt Collum. . She graduated from Center High School in 1956. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Daughter, Sherry Boshart; Brother, Jerry Collum. Survivors include, Husband, W. J. Goings; Daughter, Glenda Lutz; Brothers, Jack Collum & wife, Frances, Billy Ray Collum & wife, Deanna.

JUDY CARRINGTON
Judy Carrington, 77, of Center, died April 21, 2018, in Nacogdoches. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born February 25, 1941, in Center, to Hobson Lawson and Lela Jones Lawson. JOE ELLIS
Joe Ellis, 90, of Center, Texas, died April 22, 2018 in Center. Interment was in Jackson Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born on July 23, 1927 in Joaquin, Texas to Nathan Percy Ellis and Audrey Cole Ellis. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Joe joined the faculty at Center High School and taught history from 1949 to 1950. He was called back to serve his country again during the Korean War. In 1952, he returned to Center High School where he served as history, science, aviation and chemistry teacher. He also led the Junior Historical Society. After teaching a number of years, Joe became Curriculum Coordinator and Superintendent of Center ISD and remained in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Two Brothers; One Sister. Rodney Hammers, 56, of Gary, Texas, died April 20, 2018 in Houston. Interment was in Corinth Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born April 3, 1962 in Pasadena, Texas to Frank and Joyce LaVerne Brooks Hammers. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Father-in-law, Carl L. Haberle. William Travis Dorsey, 77, of Tenaha, died April 19, 2018, at his residence. Interment was in Ramah Cemetery, Tenaha, Texas. He was born March 26, 1941, in Hemphill, to Frank Dorsey and Emma Maxine Davis Dorsey. He served his country in the United States Army, during which time he was stationed in Korea.
