The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 P.M. on May 17, 2011 at the Shelby County Museum.  The guest speaker this month will be Tem Morrison.  He will speak on the Caddo Indians and will demonstrate how the Indians made arrowheads from flint rock.  Everyone is invited.




Terry Raymond Burch, 57 of Stanley Louisisana, died May 3, 2011 at his residence. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. He was born on July 12, 1953 in Orange, Texas to Troy and Emily Burch. He was preceded in death by, Father, Troy Burch. Survivors include, Wife, Linda Burch; Sons, Terry Gene Burch & wife Kim of Center Texas, Jason Troy Burch & wife Tammy of Center Texas; Step sons, Colin Broadus of Long Branch Texas, John Blunt of Stanley Louisiana, Jason Blunt & wife Becky of Stanley Louisiana, Jeremy Blunt of Logansport, Louisiana; Mother, Emily Burch of Stanley Louisiana; Sisters, Lonna Crawford & husband Steve of Stanley Louisiana, Carla Caston & husband David of Stanley Louisiana, Joanna Cortinez & husband Shane of Stanley Louisiana; Brothers, Jeffrey Burch of Longview Texas, Jacky Burch of Stanley Louisiana.

Alton Lee “John” McCarty, Sr., 50, of Houston, died April 25, 2011 in Houston. Burial was in Patroon Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born June 8, 1960 in Houston to Arthur Carl McCarty and Mattie Loucille Rayburn McCarty. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, Daughters, Marla McCarty of Houston, Kimberly Wheeler & husband, Daniel of Katy, Tina Schwaab of Katy; Son, Lee McCarty of Houston; Sisters, Lucy Barrios of Houston, Laura Grace Clark of Houston; Brother, Charles Elton McCarty of Houston; Mother of his children, Beverly Ginther.

Charles H. Powdrill, 78, of Center, died April 28, 2011 at his home. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas. He was born October 19, 1932 in Shelby County to Truitt Powdrill and Maggie McNeese Powdrill. He served as a Military Policeman in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by, Wife, Ruth Powdrill; Son, Allen Powdrill; 10 Brothers & Sisters. Survivors include, Daughters, Peggy Woodfin & husband, Neil of Center, Daughter, Melissa Powdrill Bailey & husband, John of Center; Son, Mike Powdrill & wife, Sheila of Joaquin; Step Sister, Glenda Wallace of Center.

James La'Vint Bohn Eaden, 4 months, died April 19, 2011 at Dallas Parkland Hospital. Burial was in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. He was born December 13, 2010 to Monica Lamborn and James Levent Eaden of Timpson. Survivors include, Father and Mother; Sisters, Angel Eaden of Dallas, Chasity Eaden of Nacogdoches.

Elton Fenley, 75, of Center, died May 1, 2011 at his residence. Burial was in Mt. Herman Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born January 17, 1936 in Nacogdoches to Elva Norris and Viola Bates Fenley. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Wife, Ruth Fenley; Daughter, Patsy Lander; Sister, Thelma Fenley; Brothers, Zeno Fenley, B.J. Fenley, Johnny Fenley. Survivors include, Children, Glenn Fenley & wife Laurie of Baytown, Tommy Fenley & wife Francine of Splendora, Anita Moss of Center, Daughter, Patsy Lander; Brother, Lamar Fenley & wife Frances.
