My name is Capri Williams and my family is from Timpson, in Shelby County.  They have a cemetery next door to their house the "Timpson Colored Cemetery"  My great gf William, the son of a slave & master, is buried there, as well as his wife, Sarah Driver, the Driver & Hooper familes are "suppose" to be among the first black families to settle in Timpson. Looking for info on Timpson, & St Augustine, Panola Cty, where I believe my family were slaves.    Williams & Salter family on father side.  On mother's in Washington-on-the-Brazos, Washington Cty, Tx, looking for info on Coleman, Hunt, Johnson, Franklin families  Email cmays@attbi.com

WAYNE "FOX" CROCKER---Wayne "Fox" Crocker, 55, of San Augustine died May 31, 2002 in Houston.  Burial was in New Hope Cemetery.  Born September 24, 1946, he was the so of Leo and Birdie Lout Crocker.    Mr. Crocker was preceded in death by his daughter Samatha Crocker.   Survivors include daughter, Amber Crocker of Center; sons, Dewayne Crocker, Nicholas Crocker and Michael Crocker, all of Center; Mother, Birdie Rae Crocker of Center; sister Betty Chilton of Waco. KARL F. PHILLIPS---Karl F. Phillips, 71, of Center, died June 1, 2002 at his residence.  Cremation was requested by the family.   Born July 7, 1930, in Minneapolis, Minn., he was the son of Karl F. and Agnes G. Baxter Phillips.  Survivors include wife, Adah Elaine Phillips of Center; son, Karl John Phillips of California; daughter Vicki Miller of Virginia City, Nevada; step-children, Rhonda Erickson of Houston, Michael Martin of Lake Jackson, Diana Young of Austin and Jennifer Dowden of Leesville, Louisiana.  Mangum Funeral Home.
RUTHIE PEARL MAINER HUGHES---Ruthie Hughes, 68, of Timpson, died June 2, 2002 in Nacogdoches.  Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.  Born September 22, 1933, in Rusk, she was the daughter of Ell Flaurrie Ford Mainer.  She is survived by her husband Bowden Hughes of Timpson; son, Edgar Hughes of Timpson; daughter Ann Acres of Houston.  Taylor Funeral Home.
J.W. "BILL" MCSWAIN---Bill McSwain, 86 of Center died June 3, 2002 in Shelby Regional Medical Center. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.  Born June 11, 1915, in Shelby County, he was the son of Sanford Bunk and Stella Holt McSwain.  Survivors include his wife, Iris McSwain; sons, Rex McSwain of Crockett, Kenneth McSwain of Center and Billy McSwain of Joaquin; Daughter Jackie Adams of Nacogdoches; brother, S.B. McSwain of Center; sisters, Octavia McSwain of Sebetha, Kansas and Lorena LaFitte of Houston. Mangum Funeral Home.
SARA B. SMELSER---Sara B. Smelser, 90, of Joaquin, died June 3, 2002 n Shawnee, Oklahoma.  Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.  Born September 21, 1911, she was the daughter of Oscar Julius Bryan and Lillia Ross Bryan.  She was preceded in death by two husbands, first Joseph S. LaFitte and then by Raith Smelser.   Survivors include daughter Susan Sparkman of Shawnee, Oklahoma; step-son Ldynwood Smelser of Center.  Mangum Funeral Home.
EVELYN RUTH O'NEILL---Evelyn Ruth O'Neill, 91, of Shelbyville died June 4, 2002 in Pine Grove Nursing Home.  Burial was in Shelbyville Cemetery.  Born May 21, 1911, in Gonzales County, she was the daughter of John Walter and Nora Maude Ledbetter McGinty.   She was preceded in death by two husbands, first Jesse T. Allen and Z.B. O'Neill.   Survivors include son Jesse T. Allen, Jr. of Center; daughters, Shirley Ruth Carter of Shelbyville and Marilyn Rose Allen of Longview; sister, Edith Pullin of Nixon.   Mangum Funeral Home.
KATHRYN E. COLE---Kathryn Cole, 75, died June 4, 2002 at her residence.  Burial was in Lone Cedar Cemetery. She was born October 11, 1926 in Center.  Mrs. Cole is preceded in death by her husband J. Rex Watson; son Don Watson and sister, Loyce Jean Beach.   Survivors include her husband, Richard Cole of Grand Prairie; daughter, Diane Stinson of Halton City, Texas; sister Virginia Ann Faulk of Alabama.   Watson & Sons Funeral Home.
WOODROW MCCARTY---Woodrow McCarty, 82, of Center, died June 1, 2002 at his home.  Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.  Born July 27, 1919 in Angelina County, he was the son of William Reed and Lillie Wier McCarty.  He is preceded in death by his wife Dixie McCarty.   Mr. McCarty is survived by his daughters Wanda Bennett of Hillsboro, Texas and Suzanne Gates of Jonesboro, Louisiana; son  Woodie McCarty of Panama City Beach, Florida.  Watson & Sons Funeral Home.
