HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Wright Patman

Information contained in this booklet includes the name, population and origin of one of the eighteen counties in the first Congressional District of Texas, which I have the honor to represent; dates of establishment of the Post Offices and the names of the postmasters and their appointment dates. The origin of the name of the town and other pertinent information is included for each post office.

Town and communities which have never had a post office are also included with pertinent information.

Certain abbreviations were used and are defined as follows:

(A) Acting Postmaster

(MA) Military acting-an acting postmaster appointed during the military absence of the previous postmaster. In many cases that postmaster resumed office upon his return.

(N) Name changed by marriage.

(*) Denotes a postmaster appointed under authority of Confederate States of America.

Each county contains a map denoting those towns which have had a post office and those which presently have a post office. Those towns which have never had a post office are also included. The following symbols were used on the map.

A Town which at one time had a post office.

A town which presently has a post office.

County seat and also a post office.

Towns which have never had a post office are denoted by a number and listed alphabetically below the map.

Postmasters and their appointment dates are obtained from the postal records of the United States Archives and the Department of the Post Office, Washington, D. C.

Mileage location of each post office was obtained from sight location records, U. S. Archives.

S H E L B Y C O U N T Y

In eastern Texas bordering Louisiana. One of the original counties, created in 1836 and organized in 1837 out of the Mexican municipality of Tenaha. Named for American Revolutionary soldier, Isaac Shelby, of Tennessee. County seat - Center.

Twelve miles southwest of Center. Named for Herman Aiken, Captian in the Mexican War, it was founded about 1895.

EAGLE MILLS

Named for an employee of the Hicks Mills, it was founded about 1885. Once known as Sholar, it was a thriving village but by 1946 Eagle Mills had lost its business and become a ghost town with one residence.

EAST HAMILTON

In the southeast corner of Shelby County six and one-half miles northeast of Sexton, Sabine County. Founded about 1830, it was once an important shipping point for steamboats plying the Sabine River.

PATROON

In southeastern Shelby County twelve miles southeast of Shelbyville on Patroon Bayou. Named by early settlers it means land owner with manorial privileges and right of entail such as those granted unter the old Dutch grants of New York (abolished in 1850). Established about 1860.

SHELBYVILLE

Seven miles southeast of Center. Named for Isaac Shelby of Tennessee in 1837 by the Congress of the Republic of Texas. Founded in 1824 by settlers from Tennessee, it was first named Nashville. County seat until 1866 when the county records were move by night to Center.

SILAS

Seven miles south of Timpson on the Timpson-Stockman Highway. Named for Silas Baines, first merchant, for a time it was known as "Battle Ridge: because of the quarrels over naming the community. Founded about 1880, it was at one time a lignite production center and a timber shipping point on a spur of the Santa Fe Railroad. Removal of the railroad caused the community to decline.
