The following was presented by

Mrs. Rubye May L. Biggers at

C. H. Daniels High School Reunion in 1993:

The first colored school eas built prior to 1920, according to Miss Mody Nobles, who was one of the first graudates in the 1921-1922 term.  Her principal was R. M. BROWN.  His co-worker was MANNIE JENNINGS.  In the two room school, the two teachers worked co-operatively to shape the lives of five girls.   They were ANNA LEE HART, LEONIA LINSCOMB, FLORA BLOUNT, MODY NOBLES and MAULINE OSBY.  After finishing the first colored school, Miss MODY NOBLES, ANNA LEE HART, and LEONIA LINSCOMB attended Prairie View Senior Academy until they received their certification to teach.  This first school was located on what is known as the Henry Hollins Site.
Later additional land was purchased from Aaron Bridges and a new school was erected.   This School contained five rooms and an auditorium with a stage.   Its location was near where the present one stands.
Mr. C. H. Daniels was principal.  The teachers were, E. O. Pace, Mannie Jennings, Martha Pearce, Beulah Biglow and Picksey Cauley.  Miss Mody Nobles replaced Piucksey cauley after completeing her certification.  She remained with the school system for 42 years.  A. E. Day was supervisor then.
As attendance continued to grow there was additional need for a larger school.  At that time, Mr. E. L. Movvett, Superintedent, who was responsible for the build of a larger school in 1928.  Mr. C. H. Daniels's staff increased.  Erma Daniels James served one year replacing Miss Donnie Lee Booth who was completing her work in Prairie View for her B.S. Degree.  Donnie Lee Booth, Louise Driver, Beulah Biglow and Mody Nobles made up the faculty.  Later Mildred Mullins and Mrs. Willie Lathan were added.
Mr. Daniels served as principal until is death in 1950.  During that same year Mr. Perry Sampson became Principal.  Mr. Sampson had served as coach and teacher prior to that time.  He served as principal for 18 years.  Then came intergration.
The Center Colored School became C. H. DANIELS SCHOOL in 1953.   This honor was bestowed on Mr. Daniels for his interest, understanding, patience and the guiding had to so many students in their fields of endeavor.
With a different person at the helm, many changes were made.  They included participation in extracurricular activies.  They were basketball, baseball, U.I.L., dramatic club, mathematics club, band and choir.
As new and different activies were included, teachers were increased.   Many of those teachers' names appear at the end.
The year of 1968, the year of intergration, brought many changes.   They included new job assignments, resignations and re-assignments.
You cannot imagine the dilemma we tolerated as the results of being relocated.  If you do not know-- you can't imagine--ask some of us gathered here tonight.
Yes, intergration brought many changes, but those of us who attended C. H. Daniels and taught there shall always cherish the memories of a group of dedicated teachers and students striving for a common good--a better education.
