The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting September 16, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. The guest speaker will be noted historian David Swanzy.  Everyone is invited to attend.

Marjorie Beth Ruddell, 84, of Center, died August 1, 2014 at Green Acres Nursing Home in Center. Interment was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born September 8, 1929 in Shelby County to Robert Hollis and Lola Mae Jacobs. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Husband, Johnnie Ruddell; Daughters, LaDonna Mae Ruddell, Deborah Kay Ruddell Jones; Sister, Lola Mae Jacobs. Survivors include, Son, Robert Ruddell of Center; Granddaughter, Pam Williams of San Benito.

Henry Doyle Carroll, 81, of Joaquin, died August 4, 2014 at Pine Grove Nursing Home. He was cremated and no services are planned. Hughes and Willie Eva Bowlin Hughes. He served his country in the U. S. Army. He was preceded in death by, Father, R. C. Hughes; Mother, Willie Eva Burns; Brothers, Harvey Hughes, R.C. Hughes, Jr., Robert Hughes, Wayne Hughes; Sister, Johnnie Ruth Adams. ATTORNEY JOHN R. SMITH
Attorney John R. Smith, 74, of Center, died August 6, 2014 in San Augustine. Interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas. John Russell Smith, aka “John R,” was born in Knox County, Texas on March 31, 1940 to John Pate and Lois Louise "Honey" Smith. John R was also an accomplished writer. His book “Redneck Country, Black Letter Law” was an intriguing novel and had many people in Shelby County asking when the next book would be released. He was working on three other books at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Mother & Father-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. W. O. Conway. Survivors include, Wife, Cindy Conway Smith; Son, John Russell Smith, Jr. & his spouse, Mark Dunn of Tampa, Florida; Sisters, Nancy Lambert & husband, Don of Kentucky, Rita Smith of Reno, Nevada; Sister & Brother-in-law, Barbara Conway & Robert Earl Bailey of Nacogdoches.

Michael D. Moody, Jr., 37, died July 15, 2014 in the V.A. Hospital following a sudden illness. Interment was in Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Timpson, Texas. He was born October 8, 1976 in Longview, Texas to Mike Moody, Sr. and Mary Davis Moody. He served his country in the U. S. Navy. He was preceded in death by, Father, Mike Moody, Sr.; Sister, Rebecca Wheeler. Survivors include, Wife, Jennifer Richie Moody of Hallsville, Texas; Son, Dusty; Mother, Mary Davis Stevens & husband, John of Diane, Texas; Sisters, Lynn Moody Bristol & husband, Rick of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Laura Bumford of White Oak, Texas.
