The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting September 16, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. The guest speaker will be noted historian David Swanzy.  Everyone is invited to attend.

Joseph "Jody" Frank Whitman, 60, of Copperas Cove, Texas, formerly of Shelbyville and Joaquin, died August 22, 2014 at ETMC Tyler. He was born June 7, 1954 in Orange, Texas to John Joseph & Helen Louise Johnson Whitman. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Brothers, John Whitman, James Whitman. Survivors include, Daughters, Renee Martin & husband, Kevin of Copperas Cove, Louise Hernandez & husband, Albert of Prairieville, Louisiana, Heather Kendrick & husband, Terry of Joaquin.

James Kenneth Verner, 74, of Center, died August 22, 2014 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. Interment was in New Hope Cemetery, Shelby County. James Kenneth Verner was born to James Walter Verner and Velma Vallie Davis Verner in Commerce, Texas on February 9, 1940. He was preceded in death by, Mother, Velma Vallie Davis Verner; Wife, Laura Lee Verner; Father, James Walter Verner; Brother, Gerald Eugene Verner; Infant brother, Jonathan Verner. W. M. “Buck” WILLIAMS, JR.
W. M. “Buck” Williams, Jr., 90, of Center, died August 26, 2014 at his home. Interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas. He was born in Shelby County on December 21, 1923, to Walter Williams and Willie Ada Muckleroy Williams. He graduated from Center High School in 1941. He served his country in the U. S. Navy. Survivors include, Wife, Melba Grimsley Williams; Daughter, Montie Dawson of Longview, Texas; Son, Todd Williams & wife, Donna of Weatherford, Texas. Buck had eight brothers and sisters, but only two brothers survive, Banks Williams & wife, Dorothy, of Montgomery, Texas, Lowell Williams & wife, Karen, of Longview, Texas. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Betty Williams of Longview, Betty Grimsley of Center, Irene Grimsley of Winnsboro, Texas.

Joe Dan Hairgrove, 77, of Timpson, Texas, died August 26, 2014, in San Augustine, Texas. Interment was in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born April 20, 1937, in Shelby County, Texas, to Joel Otto and Leta Mae Bowlin Hairgrove. He graduated from Timpson High School in 1955. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Brother, Charles Hairgrove; Sister, Thelma Joyce Tompkins. Survivors include, Wife, Betty Hairgrove of Timpson; Son, Shawn Hairgrove of Timpson; Daughters, Nat Klein & husband, Boo of Center, Texas, Trellis McCann & husband, Gary of Center, Sutton Spieckerman & husband, Jeff of Zephyr, Texas; Brother-in-law, Homer Tompkins of Nacogdoches; Sister-in-law, Cecil Hairgrove of Timpson.

Lout and Dollie Mae Blackstock Lout. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
