The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting October 17, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. Our guest speaker this month will be Mr. Larry Hume.  He will be speaking to us about World War I. It is the 100th anniversary and he will tell us what is being done in Shelby County in remembrance of this time of our history. Everyone is invited to attend.

George Washington “G. W.” Strong, 81, of Center, died October 5, 2017, in Center. Interment was in Strong Cemetery, Shelby County. G. W. was born February 22, 1936, in Huxley, to Virgil Calhoun Strong and Fleta Fleming Strong. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Brothers & Sisters, Irene Mayfield, Mildred Wooten, Elzine Strong, Estelene Hill, Billy Strong, Louise Pickering, Mozelle Requardt. Survivors include, Wife, Bettie Strong of Center; Children, Mark Strong & wife, Tracey, of Joaquin, Elizabeth Edge of Austin, Susan Logsdon & husband, Norman, of Bryan; Sister, Lottie Hammett.

ARNOLD JAY FRAZIER
Arnold Jay Frazier, 73, of Center, passed away August 26, 2017, in Center. Jay’s wishes were to be cremated and the family will have a military honors graveside service on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Center. He was born July 23, 1944, in Houston, to Julius Pete Frazier and Thelma Louise Branch. He was honorably discharged from the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam Conflict. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Brother, Robert Frazier. Survivors include, Son, A. J. Frazier, Jr. of New Caney; Daughter, Tina Frazier of Houston; Step Children, Robert Ellis of Center, Sondra Ellis of Houston, Brandi Garza of Center; Sister, Judy Thompson of Palestine; Brothers, Billy Parker of Buffalo, David Parker of Houston; Ex-Wife, Pamela Frazier of Center.

BARBARA GENE SURETTE
Barbara Gene Surette, 67, of Houston, died October 6, 2017, in Houston. Interment was in Mt. Herman Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born November 1, 1949, in Houston, to Jesse Leon Dockens and Juanita Mills Dockens. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include, Husband, Clayton Adams of Houston; Sisters, Dixie Dockens, Debbie Dockens.

Marie Byrd Fleming, 87, a lifelong resident of Byrd Town, Texas, died October 10, 2017, at Nacogdoches Medical Center. Interment was in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas. She was born on February 13, 1930, to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Warren Byrd. She was preceded in death by, Husband, Melvin Fleming; Brothers, Earl Ray Byrd; J. W. “Buddy” Byrd. ROBERT ALFORD
Robert “Robbie” Alford, 52, of Center, died October 9, 2017, in Center. Mr. Alford’s wishes were to be cremated and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. He was born September 25, 1965, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Robert L. Alford and Freda Place Alford. Mr. Alford was a member of Addai Caddo Indian Tribe. He was preceded in death by, Father, Robert L. Alford; Brothers, Joseph Alford, David Alford.
